Ray Bradbury’s classic envisages a dystopian future in which the job of firemen is to seek out books and burn them. In this edition, introduced by Michael Moorcock, Sam Weber’s astonishing illustrations perfectly capture the novel’s haunting atmosphere.

In 1950, Ray Bradbury had a kernel of an idea for a story, and rented a typewriter in the basement of the UCLA library for nine days (it cost him $9.80). Dashing from the basement to the stacks to track down half-remembered quotations and typing at furious speed, in that short time he produced the first draft of an extraordinary novel. Serialised, widely published, adapted for film, theatre and even opera, the book, as Bradbury wrote, ‘seems to have a life that goes on recreating itself’.

Un style surprenant

J'ai été happée par la traduction "actualisée" de ce livre (1995, par Jacques Chambon). Le propos sur la place du livre dans une société hyper-(dé)connectée m'a fait beaucoup réfléchir et m'a motivée dans mon désir de prendre soin des livres, de les partager coûte que coûte, et d'en discuter absolument avec d'autres personnes. Un classique que je ne regrette pas d'avoir enfin pris le temps de lire (il est assez court).

A Classic... that I absolutely disliked from page 5 forward...

A slog. The idea I get, but ugh. I hated the writing style, the way it progressed. I just did not like much of this book at all. Which is probably why I recall nothing about it from high school when I first read it 3x years ago.

Una buena distopía

Esperaba un Orwell y terminé un poco decepcionado. El mundo que construye está interesante pero no indaga demasiado en él, algunas partes parecen inconexas y solo estar ahí para continuar con la historia. Vale la pena leerlo completamente por una parte muy particular del final, sí lo lees, sabrás cuál es cuando llegues ahí.

Fantastic

I had read this book a long time ago and remembered it as a difficult read - my english was not quite on the same level as it is today. When re-reading it now i was blown away. An amazing story paired with wonderful storytelling. After reading "boring" contemporary novels this was delightfully refreshing

Fênix não tão brilhante

É uma distopia clássica, li há muito tempo mas lembro de não ter achado tão envolvente quanto as primas mais famosas (1984 e Admirável Mundo Novo). Recomendo o conto "Bright Phoenix" que inspirou o livro (é curtinho e achei melhor que o livro).
